In 2016 thousands of women employed by ASDA to stack shelves were told that the work they did compared favourably to different work carried out by male employees who were paid a higher rate . ASDA has since appealed the decision. The same issue has now been raised again, this time by female employees at Tesco and the complaint is currently being looked at by ACAS.Since 1984 the law states that all workers who carry out jobs with comparable skills, similar levels of responsibility and of comparable worth to the employer should be paid equally. In the new Tesco case the Courts may be forced to look at the difference between worker’s apparently different jobs and adjudicate whether such a difference really exists. Watch this space!
